ROOTED is a Bible study method for slowing down and seeing what matters.
ROOTED is a simple framework designed to help you read Scripture with clarity instead of rushing to application. It guides you to notice what’s happening in the passage, understand the historical and cultural context, and then respond in a way that’s steady and personal.
If Bible study has ever felt overwhelming, ROOTED gives you a repeatable rhythm
you can use again and again—no matter where you’re reading.
Start with ROOTED: Through the Gospels — 24 focused entries that teach the method as you go.

What Is ROOTED?
ROOTED is the study method behind the ROOTED series. It was created for people who love God’s Word but often feel stuck at the “I read it” stage. Instead of rushing through a passage or pulling it into modern life too quickly, ROOTED helps you slow down long enough to see what’s actually happening in the text.
The goal is simple: understanding first—application second. When you take the time to notice context, Scripture becomes clearer, richer, and more grounded.
The Rhythm (one chapter a day)
Read one chapter. Move through it in small sections. Write as you go.
ROOTED is less about speed and more about staying present with the text.
The ROOTED Study Method™ is a Meadow & Root framework designed to support contextual, Scripture-first study.
Read the chapter once (start wide): Read the whole chapter straight through to catch the flow. Then go back and work in small sections ( a few verses at a time).
Break it into “bite-size” groups: Divide the chapter into natural chunks–where a scene changes, a new speaker shows up, or the topic shifts. (Usually 3-8 verses per chunk, but follow the passage.)
Write quick answers first:
- Who is speaking/acting? Who is being addressed?
- Where are we (temple, house, road, region)?
- When is this happening (Sabbath, festival, Roman rule, travel)?
- What is the conflict/problem? What’s at stake?
- What words feel unfamiliar (titles, customs, objects)?
Circle or list what you need to look up:
- People groups: Pharisees, Sadducees, Samaritans, Gentiles
- Places: synagogues, temple courts, Judea, Galilee
- Practices: Sabbath, fasting, ritual washing, Passover, betrothal
- Objects: denarius, talents, minas, leaven, alabaster jar
- Titles: rabbi, Messiah/Christ, Son of Man, centurion
Keep it grounded and simple:
- Study Bible (footnotes, maps, timelines)
- A trusted commentary (my favorite)
- Bible dictionary/encyclopedia (best for cultural terms)
Rule: If you can explain it in 2–3 sentences, you’ve done enough.
- Don’t start with random blogs or hot takes.
- Don’t watch 10 videos and call it research
- Don’t chase every detail–focus on what affects meaning
If a cultural claim feels important, confirm it in two reliable places (example: study Bible + dictionary).
This helps avoid accidental myths.
Write It Down (ROOTED Notes)
Use this simple format:
Context Notes (2–4 lines)
- Setting:
- Cultural detail:
- Why it matters:
What this tells me about God (1–2 lines):
One thought to carry (1 line):
Repeat Through the Chapter
Work chunk by chunk until the chapter is finished. Then write a 2-3 sentence summary:
What was this chapter mainly about?
Keep It Close
Keep your notes with your Bible–so you’re building a person study record you can return to.
